Humanitarian action in Madagascar

In a world where humanitarian needs are on the rise and 50% of the global population is under 30, we are committed to ensuring that Scouts have the skills, values and resources to address the immediate and long-term needs in their communities in response to disasters and protracted crises. Discover how we fund and support this essential area of work in Madagascar.

When Tropical Storm Ana and Cyclone Batsirai ravaged Madagascar at the end of January this year, over one thousand Scouts mobilised swiftly to provide vital logistical support to those devastated and displaced by the disaster.

Using their unique knowledge of the local communities and driven by the Scout Promise to serve others, they provided life-saving assistance to the National Office for Risk and Disaster Management and international partner NGOs. Scouts also organised fun and entertaining activities for displaced children — a lifeline for families in such emergencies. Their immediate efforts were supported an emergency World Scouting grant, thanks to available project funding.

The experience allowed Madagascar Scouts to identify their strengths and limits, including the need to train more Scouts in humanitarian action. With support from World Scouting, a workshop took place on 17 October to train an additional 30 young leaders to prepare for and coordinate their response to natural disasters. A national policy and operational framework are now also in development.

Your support makes all the difference

DONATE to our Annual Appeal

We invite you to join our Annual Appeal so we can educate and develop over 100 million young people worldwide. We will achieve this through concrete projects in seven priority areas defined together with the World Organization of the Scout Movement to strengthen and grow this vital force for good. Discover these seven priorities — including humanitarian action — on our donation page here.

Your donation will contribute to more training on humanitarian action response and the delivery of Scouting in humanitarian settings to skill and empower an additional 2000 young people from 15 National Scout Organisations.

Thank you for your valuable support to World Scouting.

For Scouting. For Good. Together.
