Clean water, bright future: how a single project benefits thousands in South Sudan
Did you know that in South Sudan only 2 out of 10 people have access to clean water and basic sanitation? Watch how with a single Scout project, Patrick is providing safe drinking water and improving the health and education of thousands in South Sudan.
Scouts from the Rhino Rover Crew, led by Messenger of Peace Hero, Patrick Kilo Evans, have worked hard to improve children’s access to clean water in South Sudan to combat issues of child mortality due to water-borne diseases. Recognising that they could take action to improve sanitation services and access to clean drinking water in their community, the Scouts have installed water tanks in five schools, hand- washing facilities and trained more Scouts and non-Scouts to educate others on good hygiene habits.
This Messenger of Peace project has truly transformed the community, as testified by the pupils and their teachers: weekly reported cases of stomach pain, diarrhoea, typhoid and other illnesses have been massively reduced; school attendance is up as fewer pupils are absent due to issues related to a lack of water; pupils have adopted good hygiene practices; there has been a remarked improvement in the discipline, smartness and cleanliness of children and the school environment; and the project has created a strong relationship between the pupils and teachers.
